Meet Joe

Joe Eatmon was born and raised right here in Tuscaloosa.
His mom, a beloved teacher, was affectionately known as “Mom” to many children in West Tuscaloosa beyond just Joe and his sister. In 2001, Joe graduated from Tuscaloosa’s Central High School in 2001 as a basketball star. He continued this basketball career at Jones Community College in Ellis, Mississippi and then at Bevill State in Jasper, Alabama, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. He continued playing basketball while earning a master’s in teaching from the University of West Alabama. Joe is a member of the Delta Phi Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. Joe is currently working on his doctorate in higher education.
Joe’s career is a testament to his unwavering dedication to our youth. His roles as a teacher at Livingston High School, a basketball coach at Linden High School, and in various coaching positions at the University of West Alabama and Coastal Alabama in Monroeville demonstrate his commitment to shaping the future of our community. Joe spent a decade coaching basketball at Shelton State Community College, where he placed 100% of his sophomores in four-year institutions and was named Coach of the Year five times.

Beyond his professional achievements, Joe is a dedicated leader in our community. His service as a board member for the Blackburn Institute at the University of Alabama, Temporary Emergency Services, West Alabama Unity Foundation, City of Tuscaloosa Zoning Board of Adjustments, Head Coach of the Why Not Win Institute, and the Benjamin Barnes YMCA proves that dedication. His work with the Re-enter and Re-claim nonprofit program exemplifies his commitment to creating opportunities for others. His efforts have even helped the first detention center child earn his GED while incarcerated.
Joe is currently the Dean of Community Relations at Shelton State. He is a devoted husband to his wife Erica, and a proud father to his three children JJ, Jordyn, and Joi.
Joe’s Plan: Seven Pillars, One Vision

Building Better Schools
Joe knows that schools are the bedrock of a community. His first priority will be our children and the schools and teachers caring for them daily. From community partnerships to ensure every district child is prepared with the needed supplies on the first day of school to incentives for attendance to continued investments in the New Heights Center, Joe has the vision to help shape our children’s future.
Creating Safer Communities
The safety of our district is a necessity for its growth. Joe knows that the public servants who monitor our streets and parks deserve the support and compensation that shows appreciation. He will fight to increase RSA funding and benefits for our safety personnel, reimagine the use of the Benjamin Barnes YMCA to be a Behavioral Health Center, increase funding for lighting and cameras in high-crime areas, and support the criminal justice system with dual enrollment and free community college.

Creating New Jobs, Business and Housing Opportunities
Joe will focus on removing blighted homes and businesses, identifying workforce housing areas, working with Stillman College to secure federal grant funds for deferred maintenance, and recruiting business opportunities for sit-down restaurants, grocery stores, and shopping centers.
Improving Our Infrastructure
Joe knows that our community’s infrastructure must be maintained and secure to attract new families and businesses. That’s why Joe will support and promote our airport, an essential asset to our district; support sanitary sewage and water improvements; support lighting and road improvements for public safety; and invest in improvements that make the district a walkable and bike-friendly community.

Prioritizing our Children
We must invest in our children for our community’s future. Joe will accomplish this through programs like the Vision Forward Youth Initiative, Future Forward Youth Diversion Program, in-season youth camps, coding/app development camps, and a uniform mentoring program for all the youth in the district.
Protecting our Seniors
Seniors built our state and community, and that debt must always be honored. Joe is committed to caring for and protecting our seniors through quarterly health fairs, estate planning seminars, healthy cooking classes, and expanding opportunities like the Silver Sneaker Program with PARA and the YMCA.
Increasing Community Engagement
YOU are why Joe is running. Your involvement in decision-making and your input matter. Joe will host “Coffee with Coach” to hear from you and your concerns and engage on the current council agenda. He will be open and accessible to all constituents by holding community meetings and quarterly community events. As a city council member, Joe will be YOUR voice.
